It was a tall order when we accepted the challenge to take a dark and cramped kitchen with little storage and make it into a bright, creative and cook friendly space. We began by opening the wall to an adjacent living room and allowing warm western sun to flood the space and provide inspiration and connectivity to a fantastic vintage home. The centerpiece in this cook's delight is a creamy white Italian range with clean marble counters to provide room for prep and a place for guests to enjoy the show. Locally made cabinets stretch from floor to ceiling to make use of every tiny inch while providing plenty of drawers and open shelving to keep the tools of the trade close at hand. They also disguise a dishwasher, microwave, and built in refrigerator while keeping clean lines and adding the warmth of a hand painted traditional finish. While planned for serious cooking, the new kitchen is also a tranquil refuge filled with timeless elements including a pressed tin ceiling, push button switching, and a heated window seat built of antique shutters from India. The result is an inviting kitchen that blends old and new and fits seamlessly into the heart of a traditional home.
